Notes

21.1 Magnets and Magnetic Fields

Objectives:

1. Describe the effects of magnetic forces and magnetic fields and explain how magnetic poles determine the direction of magnetic forces.
2. Interpret diagrams of magnetic field lines around one or more bar magnets.
3. Describe Earth's magnetic field and its effect on compasses.
4. Explain the behavior of ferromagnetic materials in terms of magnetic domains.

21.2. Electromagnetism

Objectives:

1. Describe how a moving electric charge creates a magnetic field and determine the direction of the magnetic field based on the type of charge and the direction of its motion.
2. Relate the force a magnetic field exerts on a moving electric charge to the type of charge and the direction of its motion.
3. Explain how solenoids and electromagnets are constructed and describe factors that affect the field strength of both.
4. Describe how electromagnetic devices use the interaction between electric currents and magnetic fields.

21.3 Electrical Energy Generation and Transmission

Objectives:

1. Describe how electric current is generated by electromagnetic induction.
2. Compare AC and DC generators and explain how they work.
3. Analyze factors that determine the output voltage and current produced by a transformer.
4. Summarize how electrical energy is produced, transmitted, and converted for use in the home.
